WHAT IS SPLEEN?
Spleen is an organ present in all mammals. The spleen of cattle, sheep and pigs has been part of our traditional diet for centuries. Spleen is rather less popular in Britain today than it has been in the past but it remains a popular delicacy abroad, especially in Palermo, Sicily.
It has been said that "Happiness is a spleen sandwich." We aim to introduce people to the delights of eating spleen by organising regular spleen tasting events at home and abroad. It is hoped that the first of these will be in the Whitstable area of Kent in summer 2015. We believe the oyster has had its day in the sun and that the time has come for spleen to make a comeback! Watch this space for further details.
We all have spleens in our bodies and in the past people believed that the spleen was the part of the body where evil intentions were generated. The term venting one's spleen actually originated in the practice of allowing air to circulate around a cow's, lamb's or pig's spleen prior to eating it in order to enhance the flavour but has come to mean getting rid of one's anger.
It is our view that troublesome thoughts do not originate in the spleen but recommend that people should keep their own spleens regularly vented and not keep things bottled up. Remember: a problem shared is a problem solved. This may involve just talking to a friend but if the problem becomes more acute there are organisations which can help with services available 24/7.
NOT FOR PROFIT
We are a non-profit making organisation, mainly because spleen is such an unpopular product. Nevertheless, once we have covered our costs we will donate any profits to charities which provide services for people who need help including SANE and other mental health charities.
